Flower field diaries: March & April

May 14, 2025

SOW, SOW, SOW!

March has long gone and April has flown by too! Whoops, we’ve neglected this little corner of our website but here’s a double update for you. Spring has swept in in a big woosh of green. Time for us to sow seeds frantically, like it’s going out of fashion, like we’re running out of time (we are). We’re all happy to be springing back into action as the growing season really begins. Many hopeful packets of seeds have been sown and the poly tunnel is bursting at the seams. We have Phlox, Cosmos, Snapdragons, the first sunflowers. The next step is to worry about them at helpful times like the middle of the night and try to keep them happy. There’s lots of moving trays of seedlings about, into water trays and out of them, checking for snails, taking propagator lids on and off. You get the jist.

We’ve planted our Sweet Peas along the netting trellis. We’ve planted happy rows of Cornflower and Ammi outside, all in neat rows interspersed with wood chip. Sally trundling about with her squeaky wheelbarrow, making everything look stripy. There’s self seeded Sweet Rocket and Nigella popping up across the field, our Canterbury Bells are starting to get going and we’ve been cutting armfuls of gorgeous Tulips! The Narcissus are finished now but our Ranunculus are just beginning. There’s never much time to mourn the passing of one variety, the next thing is always on its heels and something is always waiting patiently in the polytunnel for attention. What a lovely, busy, bursting time of year.
