You have probably noticed that we are quite into our flowers. Ok, really into our flowers. These bouquets are either partly, or totally, made up from flowers from our garden. If you are planning you to use home-grown flowers for your wedding there are a few things to keep in mind.

The first most major thing is what season you are getting married in. This will make a huge difference. If you are set on big, sexy dahlias, get married late summer / early autumn, if you are after Lily of the Valley go for late spring / early summer. Do some research and make it easier for yourself. 

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. With a kind season and weather that is doing what it is supposed to it would, in theory, be possible to grow all your own flowers, BUT it would be majorly stressful. Why not ask a florist to add some of Grandmas Sweet Peas to your bouquet, or your Mum’s roses for buttonholes, providing they are all blooming at the right time, then if it works that’s great. If it doesn’t it doesn’t it’s not the end of the world and your florist will be able to help you fill in the gaps.

I love the idea of wafting round the garden picking buckets and buckets of fresh flowers to play with, maybe in a pretty dress and sunhat, but in real life, and for a real wedding the worry would kill me! It’s bad enough getting peonies in to open at the right time, let alone growing the buggers. We love to add home-grown touches to our bouquets and use locally grown seasonal flowers where and when we can, but if you are set on adding home grown flowers you are going to need to do your homework. Serious planning, looking at seed catalogues, getting plants in at the right time and tending to their every whim is a job in itself.
