Places to stay

July 9, 2024

If you’re busy planning your perfect Secret Barn wedding, you’ve picked out canapés, the bridesmaid dresses have been ordered and you’ve started faffing over napkins and favours – it might be time to put those Pinterest boards aside for a second and think about where you’ll be spending the night after your best day ever.

Whether you’re a seasoned festival goer and camper, a big family or a little bit boujee, we’ve put together a list of Petal & Feast approved local places to stay on your wedding night.

The Artisan Bakehouse

At the other end of our country lane is The Artisan Bakehouse, a beautiful hidden bread making school that has not one, not two, but three gorgeous places to stay. They have two holiday cottages that can be rented separately or as one (by opening a secret door – very Narnia!) and a very sweet Shepherd’s Hut – a cosy honeymoon suite? Perfect for renting all together and having a little wedding commune. The Artisan Bakehouse is only a stone’s throw from The Secret Barn too, handy! They have very kindly offered Secret Barn couples a 10% discount too, ask us for the magic word.

The Steyning White House

Just a short nip down the road in lovely Steyning, the White House sleeps 8 and allows pets. Lots of Secret Barners have stayed here before and it can make a great HQ for the run up to your wedding day too. Perfect for people who want to stay with family, bridesmaids or kids. It’s right at the foot of the South Downs, with a lovely walk (‘The Horseshoe”) right outside the front door. Steyning is a lovely town with pubs, shops and cafes, as well as access to all the gorgeous countryside.

Flint Cottage, Steyning

Tucked away up Mouse Lane in Steyning, Flint Cottage sleeps 6 and is oh so ‘Country Living’.

The Pig, Madehurst

If you’re looking for full on luxury on your wedding night – kids and family be damned, then we always recommend The Pig in Madehurst. A little bit further away but completely worth the taxi ride there. Perfect decor, perfect food and perfectly secluded rooms for two. Our very own Kathleen works there, and she’s pretty perfect too.

Springwells House

A B&B in a traditional Georgian Manor House in Steyning High St. A good place to send wedding guests and there’s a four poster, canopied princess bed in one of the rooms.

The Old Tollgate

The Old Tollgate Hotel is in Bramber, near the remains of a Norman Castle (a great picnic spot with lovely views). It has 30 rooms, so could fit most of your wedding guests if you all wanted to be together. Nice and easy.

Knepp Estate

The brilliant Knepp Estate (of ‘Rewilding’ fame) is just down the road, why not stay up in the trees with the Storks? What could be more romantic than a secret treehouse with an outdoor bathtub? Not much, we’d say. If you’d rather keep your feet on the ground though they have plenty of bell tents, bothy’s and cottages to choose from.

Camp at The Secret Barn!

For those of you committed to a festival style wedding, we have a camping field! We allow 40 of you to camp in the field right next to The Barn, across the Rose Bridge. Go to sleep with the stars above you, and wake up with the birds. We have a few breakfast options for you and your guests too. As always, we wholeheartedly recommend booking our pals Beautiful Bells for the full glamping experience (see our Beautiful Bells Appreciation post for all the reasons why).

Last but not least, for couples who want to carry on partying into the night – we recommend a bus to round up you and your friends and deliver you safely into Brighton! You can stay up as late as you want and not sleep at all if you really want to. Brighton obviously has a whole host of places to stay which we won’t list here but this is the best way to keep going after lights out.
